Question Scripting of routine ftp download

Not sure if this should go herr or under "programming"

I've been working on a simple script to ftp newest versions of a database on a weekly basis. So far I am able to get the connection and get files(usually large...150M-2.5G) using ncftp. After getting the files the script terminates. I would like to incorporate some formatting and flushing of the databases also.

CODE:------------------------------------------------
cd /home/BLAST/db_hold
du -h ./
echo GETING FTP CONNECTION NOW.
date

ncftp ncbi <<**
get alu*
bye
**>>
echo FTP CONNCETION ENDED AT:
date
-----------------------------------------------------------
I've been looking for sites addressing bash scripting and ftp is rarely mentioned. Any advice or links would be appreciated.
