script to analyze system then write a .config file for kernel compiling

well as the subject says im looking for a script that will analize my hardware and write a .config file that i can edit a little to add in things like ntfs writing if such a thing exists... anyone know about something along these lines? im getting really frustrated with trying to set all the right options in the menus with "make xconfig" or "make menuconfig" and having all sorts of problems. so yeah if there is such a script or program that will do something like that i would be much thankfull :)

there are some configs provided with your redhat kernel
i can't remember what directory but they put the default configs in there
just find the one that's right for your machine and copy it to the top level of the kernel you are working on and name it .config
then when you run xconfig it will give you a working starting point for learning.

Thanks im thinking of just reinstalling from scratch. that way everything is all just default... then ill run yum to update everything. the main reason for doing the kernal compile is so i can get my audigy 2 value working and hopefully the nvidia drivers will work this time too :s

hardware specs are as follows:
CPU Athlon 64 3200+
RAM Corsair Valueselect 1 gig (2x512)
HD 2x120gig 1x250gig 1x20gig
VIDEO Leaktek 6800gt 256mb
MB Gigabyte K8N Ultra SLI

You don't run redhat 9 on the machine in your sig do you? That's as great as running Win98 on it. With a 64 bit processor, you should use a 64 bit version of a distro. If you had RH9, I'd say go with Fedora Core 4, and get the 64 bit version. I strongly dislike the RH system, but if you like it, it certainly is linux and is fine to use, just use one from this century!

nah i use fedora core 4 32bit at the moment... when i reinstall ill prolly jam x64 on instead. but yeah i just hadnt updated my profile. i like fedora because i can work my way through it... i tried ubunto but i didnt like it very much
got any other suggestions? im up for trying anything i can find if it will do what i want it to do... replace my windows installation as my main os. so basically its gotta play mp3's and divx/xvid movies as well as the normal irc and messenger thing. possibly have cedega running on it too so i can play a few games when im feeling partial to it

Every distro in the world can do all of those things. The differences in distros aren't all that much. Try several live CDs, and see what feels the best. There is no absolutes or right and wrong in choice of distro. Just try it, like it or not, then try more. I like making software from source so I like debian and slack, but I could do the exact same thing on Fedora. I do suggest trying something that doesn't support .rpm files, as those seem to me to be like windows lite, but that is a personal dislike.

Peace,

well yeah personally i like rpms coz it saves me the hassle of compiling them. i know its a bit of a contradiction to the whole point of linux but yeah thats just me. well yeah as soon as people stop leeching my computer to hell i can start installing core 4 x64 again

anyway just a little update on my situation... well ive got everything working. all my videos play. all my mp3's play, my games play (thankyou cedega :D) and i even took the time to make everything look purdy :)

still wouldnt mind a config script generator tho...
thanks for your help guys. im always shocked at how helpfull everyone is on here... especially when i have to do things like ring microsoft at work to get a solution for something. microshaft are very unhelpfull to say the least
