Screwed something up! NO SOUND help!

These are the events leading up to my system completely losing sound. I tried using apt-get to uninstall xine because I could never get it working right, but not paying attention I typed xmms. I though no prob I installed it before I'll do it again, no such luck I download it off RHN and It did not work, then I went to freshrpms and got everything with the word xmms on it and installed them all, xmms will load but not play mp3's, only audio cd's, so I looked around and found one called xmms-mp3******** which I didn't install b4, so I tried to install that and got this error

xmms-mp3-1.2.7-21.p.fr1.i386.rpm error V3 DSA signature: NOKEY, Key ID e42d547b

I uninstalled the prev crap I put in does anybody know what I did? as of right now I have NO sound at all no MP3, audio cd or system events.
need help bad could someone tell me which files I need to get up and running again..also since all this started my sys seems to be a little unstable, it froze a few times while trying to do all this. A result of me ?

UPDATE: For the hell of it I switched from GNOME to KDE and had sound there, how could I screw up only GNOME plz help!
THANK YOU:)

you are using redhat which is simple and easy, I personally have had nothing but trouble with it, second you are playing witch packages, I hate packages, once again nothing but trouble from them, try compiling xmms from source that should work.

Maybe in the event of things you uninstalled whatever sound server Gnome uses (ESD?)? Check to see that you have ESD installed:
esound daemon

I believe RedHat capitilizes on Gnome, so removing things could easily cause Gnome not to work. Seems like each distro does that though, chooses one of the big 2 DE's to support, and runs with it.

Anyway, head over to www.xmms.org and see about installing the packages they provide to you for your distro.

Cool

now my comp keeps freezing while GUI is up ,and at console while logged in or not keep getting this msg

hdc: cdrom_pc_intr: The drive appears confused (ireason = 0x 1)

what the hell is that??????

#@%#ing linux!!!!!, I'm not giving up will NEVER go back to MS but this sucks... it's been a little to easy up until now was expecting some type of prob but not this big....

What'd you do...

Post up what you get from:
ls -l /dev/cdrom
ls -l /dev/hdc
cat /etc/fstab

And:
rpm -qa | grep xmms

Type those into a terminal and post up their results.

As a side note:
Have you considered trying other distros?

Cool

rpm -qa | grep xmms:
Just went back to the command prompt..

messy but I sure you expected that....
as for trying other distros i'm definatly thinking about it. I love RH and haven't had alot of prob but every one I do have is rpm related..
thinking about Debian I like the software availibility seems cool. what do you think?

Heres weird after a reboot (not the first or tenth)my gnome sounds started working again, I'd have to try xmms again to see what happens, It's cool that there working but the fact that they were broken for 2 days then just started working again doesn't show me much stability ya know?
is there anything you can figure out from those results? means nothing to me still to new.

THANX

No, everything really looks just fine...

Since the problem 'cleared up' it's really hard to diagnose..

Cool
