Screen to small :p
 
hello, im running Red Hat 7.0, actualy installed off of a disc in the back of SAMS teach yourself Red Hat linux, but ill assume that doesnt make a huge difference... anyways, when i open many different programs under x (well gnome/kde is all ive tried), they tend to run off the side of the screen. im using a monitor that supports 800X600, but only @ 56 hz.... and my ATI 3d Rage Pro Turbo wont go below 60 so im stuck in 640X480:mad: . anyways, could anyone give me some advice on how i might remidify this situation? i have ran Xconfigurator quite a few times and told it 640X480 so ill assume that X knows what screen res i want

why don't you use 800x600 then more stuff will fit on the screen.

It also sounds like a virtual desktop is running, so you might have 800x600 desktop on 640x480 screen size.


have a look in the XF86Config-4 or XF86Config file at the screen section

err i dont mean to be offensive at all, but htis is a quote from my orriginal post:

id LOVE to go to 800X600 (at least), i hate 640X480, but as it says im stuck in 640X480.

but your desktop is at 800x600, so you can't see it all at one time?

i have ran Xconfigurator quite a few times, and told it 640X480, as well as another program that i cant remember the name of at the moment that let me set my mouse correctly as well :p.

there is no line like this in the config file?


Virtual 800 600


when you move the mouse around does it move the desktop over to where you can see everything?


if not then I suggest that your monitor needs adjusting

well sorry for the huge message, but it seemed the best way for me to answer questions that i dont really know the answer to :p. anyways, for those of us with short memories, the problem was basicly that my monitor sucks so im stuck in 640X480, and linux does not seem to like/understand that. tks in advance for any help

you may not using the server you think,

which means your problem might be the 800x600 modes

the largest mode becomes the virtual size by default, unless you specify a virtual size.

if you cannot get 800x600 then you should remove it.

well now that my cable company got my internet back up <grr>, im back :p I edited my XF86Config file and removed all of the 800X600 references in the screen section, and the problem remains exactly as it was... im really quite confused here as to why it would be doing this, but hey a challenge is good for the mind right? :rolleyes:

Well if you did not backup the file already you might want to.

try removing some modelines
