If it is using the correct driver for the video card, and has a low resolution limit, then it could be that it did not determine the monitor correctly from its database and is using frequencies that are not fast enough to provide 1024 resolution. You can try to google your monitor model to find its frequency range and compare that to the config file. Trouble is if you are running knoppix as a live cd I am not sure if you can kill the x-server to reset the frequencies. Probably though I would think. ( Usually cntrl-alt-backspace) The config file should be located in /etc/X11/XF86config-4 if it uses xfree86 or /etc/X11/xorg.conf if it uses the xorg manager.
