Screen Resolutions with Ubuntu 9.10

I have installed Ubuntu 9.10 and every time I log in the default Resolution of 800x600 sets itself up but I can go to 1024x768, which is my preference, I try to save my settings but it comes up with an error. The error is this: "Failed to parse existing X Config file'/etc/x11/xorg.conf'!. Any help would be great. Thanks JD

add this to the monitor section of your xorg.conf file

#UseModes "Modes0" #monitor0usemodes
Option "PreferredMode" "1024x768"

this what my xorg looks like at the section that I edited.

Section "Monitor"
#DisplaySize 350 260 # mm
Identifier "Monitor0"
VendorName "GWY"
ModelName "VX920"
HorizSync 30.0 - 85.0
VertRefresh 50.0 - 140.0
#UseModes "Modes0" #monitor0usemodes
Option "PreferredMode" "1024x768"
EndSection

I have tried the response but it did not seem to work here is what my xorg.conf file looks like:

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
DefaultDepth 24
EndSection

Section "Module"
Load "glx"
EndSection

Section "Device"
Identifier "Default Device"
Driver "nvidia"
Option "NoLogo" "True"
EndSection

try adding
Option "PreferredMode" "1024x768"
or
modes "1024x768"

to the section "screen" before the EndSection line
