So, after all the trials and tribulations it turns out that it was the hardware issue that you just pointed out, tink, and then it was that xorgsetup doesn't by default put any HorizSync or VertRefresh values into the xorg.conf.

Thanks sooooo much for all of your help, especially you tink. I'm now happily at 1152 x 768 and I have options!! :)

Just adding stuff as such doesn't necessarily fix problems.

In his case I think the problem was the driver the system
picked for the device.

You could read
man xorg.conf
for details on how this file works.

your responses in this thread helped me solve the same problem with the same card in a machine I'm prepping for my mother (thought when I'm done, it may turn out 800x640 is all she can really see!). Thanks much.
