screen resolution issue ,bottom half screen off

Hi,...
i downloaded some software yesterday from the ubuntu rep. This morning my screen has the bottom part of in black there are the KDE docky ,firefox ,terminal & rhythmbox icons ,so is the taskbar..but the wallpaper is cut up ,4cm off.
I have noticed that the splash screens res has changed too. it's sharper (smaller).
The browser as a consequence is also half lit & having noscript in the bottom without it being visible is a problem ..
Why has this happened & how can i fix it. the last working config , well that's somewhere else
thankx

Clam modules, wireless sftwre, I'm thinking the Kde elements are causing the glitch. all effects are set off & or if on only minimum ..I already removed all of Edubntu ,i thought that might fix it. the Vga. is Not connected to the 2'nd monitor(hdtv)..
my broadband is currently downloading a kit 'gtk' ,at 14Kb/s how's that for Slow.. i resigned myself with the idea that i used up my downloading volume my isp 'gives' ( Belgacom) .. the largest download was 15Gb documentary & maybe another twenty for all the clean installs if messed around with the last 4wks ......;So if it's not a limit issue than that's another problem altogether..
I thankfully left 1 laptop with 'window',just to keep some sanity..
