Screen resolution gets reset back to 1600x1200 default

When i first installed the screen resolution defaulted to 1600x1200 which i changed in the system settings to 1280x1024 but after a reboot it goes back to 1600x1200.
I looked in the xorg file but there wasn't anything immediately obvious that would cause this to reset.
I have pasted my xorg file. Can anyone tell me why this keeps resetting and how to fix this please? thanks in advance, I have a Mitsubshi diamond plus 92 monitor and Nvidia GeForce FX 5950 Ultra graphics card

If you don't want your monitor to run in certain modes, then remove them from the screen section.

So i could just set the screen section to..

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Device "NVIDIA Corporation NV38 [GeForce FX 5950 Ultra]"
Monitor "NFK9905"
DefaultDepth 24
SubSection "Display"
depth 24
virtual 2048 1536
modes "1280x1024@85"
EndSubSection
EndSection

And it will always use 1280 x 1024?

I guess part of my question was not understanding how it was going back to 1600 each time.
I always thought the x config file used the first screen mode as the default which in the case of my x config file is 1280 so i don't know why it would put it as 1600x1200

Is your monitor a flat panel?? And are you using the nvidia drivers off the nvidia website or through your distrobution? The nvidia drivers from nvidia will try to guess the "native" resolution of flat panel LCDs. That could explain a lot in your case, if you have an LCD.

In short though, yes you could do that. I would put in more than one mode though, don't limit yourself to much.
