Screen Reolution Settings
 

Hello All,

Sorry for the umpteenth millionth question about screen resolution but I have one. Hopefully my question will be somewhat different and I hope no-one gets upset with me for asking a dumb question.

I finally was able to install Mandrake 9.0 from the distro discs that came with the Linux Format magazines. The distro is running on a PII-200 with 64 Meg memory and 12GigHD. I was using a 17" CTX monitor (that I found in the trash bin outside of the FedEx Pilots Union in Memphis) and it finally crapped out. I guess a little water inside does hurt after all. :D I had a 14" DEC monitor at home that I have always had trouble getting to work correctly with my previous attempts at Linux installs but it is all I have at the moment.

I knew that when I put the monitor on the system, I would most likely get a black screen or something. I searched all morning and finally found that I could use Xdrake to set the basic hardware settings and I was finally able to boot back to the KDE. The only problem I am having at this time is that I can't select 800x600 resolution. I have added the subsection to the XF86Config-4 file but it does not provide a selection for 800x600 still yet.

What other areas should I look at to get this resolution to show up? Or if you prefer I should search some more, what keywords could I use? (Everything that I have tried, searched for, and read so far doesn't tell me what my brain wants to hear. :D

I think I answered my own question. This linux thing is getting better and better all the time.

I was able to run drakconf to get to the hardware settings options. (For those who are searching for an easy way.) I searched the HP website for the DEC (digital) monitor that I have and found a close proximity to what I have. The pdf file gave me the Horizontal & Vertical refresh rates. Using drakconf, I was able to test the settings using a "Custom" monitor. I remembered from a while back that this monitor would only allow me to set the Vertical high end to somewhere around 72. Whammo! All is well with the Linux!

Hope my learning will help someone else. Once the refresh rates are correct, it seems that I can select the necessary resolutions.:Pengy: :newbie:
