Screen Goes Black in FC3

Everynow and then in Fedora Core 3 both my screens will go black and go into power save mode (I run dual monitors with two cards, both NVidia, one a GeForce FX 5200 and the other a GeForce 4 Ti 4400 on Gateway 19" VX1110 and Dell 20" 2000FP respectively). If I move my mouse or hit a key on the keyboard it comes out of it fine. It does it at random and it's starting to get real annoying...this morning I woke up and both screens were unresponsive, first time the blackouts caused it to crash. Please help! Thanks.

Am I doing something wrong? Or said something wrong? This is over the 5th post of mine that has gotten zero responses.

I've had that problem with FC2. It recovers fine, but when it starts, it will do it several times at random. What can we do to fix this?

FYI I'm using an old voodoo3.

I doubt you've done anything wrong. There are over 33,000 unanswered posts on LQ: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...n=norepliesall
so it always seems like a minor miracle to me when one of my posts does get answered! :)

As for the black screen, do you mean it happens while you're actively using the computer, or is it the power-saving timeout thing kicking
in?

I've been having mine go black and then crazy and then black again and finally OK (without any intervention) while actively using the machine, but only since I "upgraded" to Mandrake 10.1. It happens rarely (maybe once every couple of hours at most) but is really annoying.

One time, and one time only, the machine crashed coming out of actual timed-out power-saving mode.

So if that's what's happening, I wonder if it's something to do with our distributions and kernel 2.6-something...?

jonr

For me, it happens when I'm actually using the computer. Fortunately, I haven't had any crashes yet.

Well, you might want to take a look at my thread:

dealing with similar but I suspect different problem. I get messed-up colors during these glitches, too. There's a link in the thread to yet a third thread where a user is having "patchwork" colors along with sporadic display failures, too.

I just wanted to make sure that I wasn't posting in the wrong way or something like that. I know there are a ton, just make sure I wasn't bringing it on myself :p

As far as my screens go, it's when I'm actively using the computer and if I pause when it happens and let it goes black it will go into power save, otherwise if I move the mouse or press a key it will come out of it fine, as if my screensaver had turned on (which by the way is not activated, i don't use screensavers) and I woke it up.

I checked your post, I'm going to try it later and see if it does anything. Thanks for your help.
