Make sure the sane rpm's are all installed from the mandrake cd's, and go from there. I've not personally had any luck with sane, but i'm figuring it's me bneing dumb.

Hi
USB support varies, but is better in the 2.4 kernel. You will need a recompile. In the kernel source folder there's a folder called doc in there, amongst all the other docs is one called usbscanner, which will sort you out. Easily comprehensible, and as I recall has www links to relevant stuff. As to parallell scanners, they will use some sort of SCSI emulation I imagine, but as I haven't got one, I dunno what to do.

Scanner

Couldn't find doc...
I've switched to Mandrake 8.o which was a dawdle to installwith the exception of my scanner... Canon (N65ou). I know I'm close tho' lol. I also have a problem opening Tar.gz(?) files (I downloaded Netscape 6.1 and can't install the thing tho' I did open it or send it to my 'temp' folder... I asked folk at Mandrake and their response was "why download THAT browser?" when my real question is HOW DO I INSTALL A PACKAGE (RPM?) that isn't on the CD's I purchased...
Phew... Thanks
PS Also I get a 'no permission' to access the cdrom icon on my desktop...
Too many questions I know, sorry.

hello

if you plan to install netscape, you need to copy the installation document as well, and follow it through.
even if you download netscape as an RPM file, you still ne the documentation.
for tar,gz file, you need to follow this command

tar -xvzf file name .tar.gz
to compile it, it can be one of the following
./configure
make
make install
./runme

for rpm file, you need to enter
rpm -i file name.rpm
