Saving my settings in Knoppix 7

It is frustrating that every time I look up this question I get answers which work in earlier distros of knoppix but not in 7.

What do I want?

I can remember being able to save documents and settings such as a UK keyboard in earlier versions of knoppix. I have not been able to do so with Knoppix 7. I am missing something?

Knoppix is a live cd or dvd
you do not save settings without rebuilding the image on the dvd and reburning the dvd

unless you used the manual install to hard drive

or is this a iso on a flash drive ( that will also act like a dvd and you can not save settings )

A persistent image for saving personal settings and additionally installed programs, KNOPPIX/knoppix-data.img, is supported on the boot device, optionally encrypted with AES/256bit. In general, installation as live system on flash disk is recommended.

So I booted without using the persistent file, and Knoppix booted fine.
