Saving info for reinstallation

There's probably info about this around here somewhere, but I wasn't able to find anything. Anyway, I currently have Mandrake 10.1 running smoothly on my ECS G551 laptop. Everything except the modem (which I don't really need) is working fine.
Now I'm planning to install Debian instead, just for the fun of it. I thought that as I have everything working now, maybe it would be a good idea to save some config files, so I remember what drivers I was using etc. The problem is, I don't really know which files are important (xorg.conf might be one I guess). Suggestions?

Err, Debian still uses XFree, so you can skip this one, or wait a little more because

it is to be soon (?) implemented . :D

I does? Hrm, didn't know that. Maybe I should wait a little.

Backup /etc & you home dir. - that's where most config stuff lives

Yeah, that's always a solution. My home dir is quite large, but I guess I could sort out the important stuff quite easily.

Anyway, I might as well ask another thing. The reason I was thinking of changing to Debian is that the mirrors for Mandrake's urpmi tool always seem to contain really old versions of programs, and I get the feeling that Debian's apt-get is much better if you want the latest versions of all programs. Is that true?

Yup.

Mind you, if you really want cutting edge, Gentoo might be even better. . .

Does gentoo have any equivalent to apt-get/urpmi?
[EDIT]never mind[/EDIT]
