Sansa® m240 1GB MP3 Player under Ubuntu 6.06 - Not detected

For more info on the mp3 player, go here.

I have used the mp3 under windows, it works with windows media player. But I run linux, and I want to put the songs on my laptop, witch is running Ubuntu 6.06. So I plug the sansa in via USB, and open up a music player, rhythmbox, and I don't know how I should get rhythmbox to detect my mp3. And if I need to install any codecs to play mp3s, please tell me.

Thanks.

I just picked up a Sansa m240 and am using it with ubuntu 6.06 on a hp dv4000. When I plug it in with the usb cable, Gnome auto mounts it. I just copy podcasts (mp3s) to the music folder, eject it in nautalis, wait a couple of minutes to make sure it clears the buffer, physically unplug it, and turn it on. My last player was much better, a Creative MuVo TxFm. You didn't need a cable, it just plugged into the usb slot. You could create your own folder structure. You could delete mp3s on the player. And the display would let you know when it cleared the buffer and was safe to unplug.

I thought it didn't matter, but I am running fluxbox, not gnome.

So, what directory would it be in for me to mount? /dev/?

run
tail -f /var/log/messages
in a terminal window and plug in the player. This is what I got:

I think this might have something to do with it;
Dec 24 09:34:05 localhost kernel: [17686464.960000] Vendor: SanDisk Model: Sansa m240 Rev: 1.30

My harddrive is /dev/sda (so I doubt /dev/sda2), my cdrom drive is /dev/hda, what would be a usb?

And I think I should include /etc/fstab;
Code:

      1 # /etc/fstab: static file system information.
      2 #
      3 # <file system> <mount point>  <type>  <options>      <dump>  <pass>

I just want my mp3 files from the sansa on ubuntu. How would I do that?

And what player should I use? Amarok?

sidney.harrell 12-26-2006 12:53 PM

It looks like from your log that it is /dev/sdc1

I think the command would be:
# mount -t vfat /dev/sdc1 /media/usbdisk

I don't use amorak, but once you have the player mounted, you should be able to tell amorak to look in the mounted disk, and it should look just like another drive to it.

[CODE]
Code:

lucas@dv5000t:~$ sudo mount -t vfat /dev/sdc1 /media/usbdisk
Password:
mount: mount point /media/usbdisk does not exist
lucas@dv5000t:~$ sudo mount -t vfat /dev/sdc1 /media/sandisk
mount: mount point /media/sandisk does not exist
lucas@dv5000t:~$ sudo mount -t vfat /dev/sdc1 /media/sansa
mount: mount point /media/sansa does not exist
lucas@dv5000t:~$ cd /media
lucas@dv5000t:/media$ ls
cdrom  cdrom0
lucas@dv5000t:/media$ ls -a
.  ..  cdrom  cdrom0

Hmm...Do I need to make a directory /media/usbdisk? And then set the mount point of /dev/sdc1 to /media/usbdisk?

I just did, and it worked. I load amarok, and it doesn't seem to detect the files, even when I tell it to go to that directory.

And I don't have a /music folder in there. Only /record /audible and /config .
I try with rhythmbox, and it says it can not detect MIME time in /config/config

Try looking at the disk not in amorak, but just with ls or in your file manager.
Are the songs just mp3s? Mine came with some sample songs and they weren't in the music folder. I think it may be some kind of DRM. I ended up having to format using the utility in the player just to remove the sample songs.

I just looked back, and I think I may have the c240 and you have the m240. Sorry. We're making progress, though!

Err, you can create your own folder structure with the Sandisk too. It also shows you when it is transferring files, and thus when it is finished, on the lcd display!

Both of these 'features' might only appear in later firmware versions - mine uses 3.2.8E

Edit: Just noticed that whilst you said you bought a m240 your copy/paste shows it to be a c240 instead. It's unlikely but this model might lack the above. The firmware version will almost certainly be different ;)
