sane and xsane installation, modem lites not op
I have a HP 4200C scanner. The HCL says it's linux compatable. I downloaded from Sourceforge, what I thought were the front/back ends. Both packages reported themselves as installing/installed. FC4 doesn't "find" them. That is, the Gimp says no scanner. I don't have another program to look for a scanner.
In general, if a package downloads, and everything seems to be OK, how does one find the package? I still don't have modem lights running. I install the panel applet, and even if I boot-up a day later, the applet is in the panel, but dark. My ISP (a non-profit org and Linux "friendly", gives an hour of internet access at a time. I need something almost exactly like the MS-Windows dial-up "monitor" (the device that shows connect speed and time on-line). I downloaded both GTKDialer and Chestnut dialer. Both reported themselves as installed. Neither work. The Desktop/System Settings/Add-Remove doesn't show a way to remove anything other that what came on the FC4 disto CDs. What's up with that? I've Googled myself until I have goo-gooo-googley eyes about the foregoing. All comments appreciated. |
scanner /modem
Do you mean the HCL on the Fedora site? Suggest you find out which scanners have drivers actually embedded in the FC4 distro. This will make life a whole lot easier. Scanners is still a work-in-progress in linux.
If this is an internal PCI winmodem, then suggest you consider switching to an external serial port modem (not USB). I thought FC came with Kppp which is a good frontend dialer. good luck |
Still going SANE/XSANE

Also, I found the SANE/hpoj or some such name in the Add/Remove [software], when I asked to have it installed Linux roared around, then asked for Fedora Core 4 - Disk 2. I put the CD in the drive, and zippo, nothing happened. I believe the system parsed the CD, but it could not read it. It reads in filemanager quite well. Any ideas about that? |
Modem lights running by chaning TTYs from 0 to 14. 14 is only for this setup, don't try it at home.
