sandbox for Ubuntu ??
 

Hello LQ members !

I have been using Sandboxing for Windows Operating System and wanted to know if there is a sandbox for debian based distros ??

I have tried sanbox mentioned in Debian wiki. Are there any other sandboxes ?


Help will be much appreciated.

I think you probably want to look up software such as VirtualBox :)

1. Which sandboxing s/w for "Winders" have you been using?
   1. Sandboxie?
   2. Something else?

2. What do expect of, what are you trying to accomplish with, your sandbox?

If VirtualBox more than you need, would User-mode Linux (UML) or a chroot jail suit your purposes?

I would use VirtualBox, but there are other options:
Using LXC and the utilities will require a very recent kernel (2.6.32 or later if I remember correctly) but gives you the option of isolating a single application or user (ala chroot) or an entire system environment (ala OpenVZ, etc) using the same tool.

It is not very mature, so you need to search for documentation and "how-to" information, but the core of it is built into the kernel! It requires fewer additional utilities and no virtualization engine to work, giving it some significant advantages.

I am using currently Sandboxie for Windows.
And i was wondering if there is a way to run my mozilla firefox in a sandbox in my Ubuntu.
So what is the best way to run my browser under least privileges ??

For a single application like that, I would recommend LXC. You can do it by simply changing the command-line used to start firefox: making it the easy, fast solution.
