Samba sharing printer question
I want share a printer for all Windows clients,
its prompt me required to install printer driver when I installing printer, how can I auto install printer driver on Windows clients ? Thanks |
If you look in the SAMBA configuration, there is an option to place the drivers in a directory. I, however have never done it this way. I use a standard HP LaserJet that Windows 2000/XP have the drivers for. So when my users add the printer, Windows already have the drivers and automatically install the printer for the users. Makes my life easy.
If I were you, I'd investigate how to install the drivers on the SAMBA server. Or, install the drivers on their workstations. |
You mean use A Windows client to map the Samba shared printer,
and then B Windows client easily to map the A Windows client? I think this is good way to do :) |
See if your distro has a samba-doc package. It will install 3 books in /usr/share/docs/packages/samba/ including the official samba 3 Reference Guide. Chapter 23 deals with printing. There are worked out examples in the Samba3-ByExample book as well.
Another option is to add a read-only share that contains various driver installation programs. You could also have a subfolder for other items such as the latest acroread installation programs, manuals for the programs that you use, etc. This would not be automatic, but a common place to look for install programs would be more convenient than hunting for who has that install disk. |
