Unhappy samba nmb failure to shut on log off

This is my fifth day on trying linux. It is Mandrake 9.0.
Whenever I shut down the system, it always show up
smb shut down "ok"
nmb shut down "failure".

I have tried to shut down samba at the bash shell, logging in as root, but the same message appeared. Turning on samba is Okay.

Could somebody enlighten me on this issue?

Best you,
Yammy

logs

Check the samba logs for errors. (/var/log/samba) You might find out that nmbd isn't really starting. Do you have any problems with samba?

Thanks for your help. This is my fifth day trying to use Linux, everything seems exciting but more difficult than I expect. I have borrowed some books to look around. I am still experimenting to make sure the system is OKay and to, at least, get no abnormal messages on booting up and shutting down. I am not sure whether Samba is OKay or not. Will get back to you once I finished checking the log. You are very kind indeed.

Bless you,
Yammy.

nmbd

You can see if nmbd is running by looking at the ouput of the ps console command.

ps ax

or by the top command

another way to do it would be to go to /etc/init.d as root and type : nmb status
this would tell you whether the netbios deamon is running or not.
if not..then you can do:
nmb start

The linux world is so amasing, people are so kind and helpful.

I have checked the nmbd.log and smbd. log

For the nmbd.log, the last wordings are;

nmbd/nmbd.c:main(794)
Netbios nameserver version 2.2.6pre2 started

nmbd/nmbd_subnetdb.c:create_subnets (239)
create_subnets: no local interfaces!

nmbd/nmbd.c:main(872)
Error: Failed when creating subnet lists. Exiting
"log.numbd" 112L, 5728c

But when I view the log.smbd. I was started and Got sighup.

Probably the nmbd has never got sign up and that is why is failed to shut down. But what make the nmbd failed to sign up? Is there any suggestion to help to rectify the problem?

No local interface means your network isn't configured?

What kind of network card do you have and is it configured correctly? Are you using DHCP or static IP addressing?
