Samba Mac to Linux

I have a Banana Pi that is set-up as a Plex Server. I am trying to get samba shares to work on it so I can add media to the connected external drive. My problem is I cannot connect to the server to mount the drive on my mac. I can SSH into the server, and I can ping the server via its ip address. But I cannot ping it via its hostname. So my thought is that my mac cannot resolve the hostname. I have looked for a solution but with no luck so far. Any suggestions would be very helpful.

i would say unless you have some sort of name resolution on your network, then the only machine that will be able to recognize the hostname is the machine itself, however as for samba, i would recommend trying NFS exports, as i believe mac os supports it, and they do not broadcast their existance, just my 2 cents.
