Samba Help Please
 

Hi, to whom ever is able to help

I have a very simple problem, and that is that I cannot even enter into my smb.conf to start configuring my samba server.

I need to start my samba server on my system as soon as possible.

My problem is that after typing the path
/etc/samba/smb.conf

the message is that 'permission is denied'
I've already locked in as root and have the correct password.

I really am stuck please help.

all you're doing is typing in the filename? well what do you expect it to do? you need to load it inside a text editor....

oh...I heard its something like pico or something.....
could you actuallygive me a few steps to help me get to doing it...

I really am so new to linux, that simple things lke that are difficults for me.
I have been to pico editer, but not sure what to type there, and how to save, and when I save what will happen...really am blurr..

Could you give me specific steps and commands to type so that I can at least get started

Here are a few tips for using pico:
Ctrl+a -- moves to the beginning of current line
Ctrl+n -- moves to the next line
Ctrl+p -- moves to the previous line
Ctrl+u -- undoes the last deletion
Ctrl+o -- save file
Ctrl+x -- Exits pico. You will be prompet to save if you didn't before

Im very much a newbie too, but i hope this helps. Its funny how sometimes I find myself browsing through pages of manuals, faqs, and endless web help sites to find the answer to something so simple.

If you're using a GUI (KDE or GNOME) you don't need to edit from the command line. Just go to the file in the directory, right click it and choose open with and choose text editor, but it's easier to use SWAT.
