SAMBA and IP Addresses

I've got SAMBA set up and working ok on SuSE 9.1 with KDE 4.3 - however a couple of niggles remain.....

My laptop connects via a pc card to my lan and main pc which is Windows based (sorry), the Windows machine is the gateway to the internet.

When my laptop starts up and it gets to pcmcia cards the ip address is "backgrounding" which I take to mean it hasn't aquired an address and will come back to it - the problem is that it doesn't and I have to unplug the pc card and replug it for it to aquire the ip address on the crossover cable lan i have - I don't mind doing this but i'd like to be able to get the connection up and running straight away (Windows pc running first).

My windows pc is running xp home (sorry again) but it can't see my linux laptop on the windows network, I've set samba up to be part of MSHOME but I've missed something.

Any suggestion, particularly to the ip address issue would be much appreciated.

Do you have Samba set up as a WINS server and the Windows box setup to look at the Liunx bax for WINS resolution?

Can you post your smb.conf file? It should be located in the /etc/samba directory.
