samba and antivirus


dear gurus,

have you heard samba share cause crash of linux due to virus?

i want can someone put highlight on, if we have samba server.

do i need to have antivirus on linux box. as windows machine will be accessing and each winodow machine has already antivirus installed.

the bottom line is there any risk to run samba without antivirus for linux machine.

Bottom line? Not that I can thing of at the moment. Samba caters for file sharingin a cifs environment. An infected file has to be executed to do any damage. Sharing infected files does not involve executing them, and linux can not execute Windows files natively anyway.

There could be vulnerabilities in the samba code, I suppose, that could potentially be used to compromise the machine, but that's slightly different.

You don't need an anti-virus to protect a linux system. When files are stored on a linux system they are stored with out being executable. Since they can not run, your linux system is safe. The only reason to have a anti virus program is to scan windows files, with thought of saving some poor windoze user.
