Safely remove USB Flash drive?
 

Hehe as you can see I'm an newbie from where I posted this... So here it goes:

In winders xp, when I plug in my usb flash drive, and decide to take it out, i have to click this icon in the taskbar and select safely remove hardware. This makes the activity light on the USB drive to stop and I can remove the drive.

I just wanted to know if I had to do that in Linux? Lately I have been just pullin it out while the light is still on! I don't want to kill my usb flash drive, so is their anything I have to do to stop its activity?

I'm sorry, I'm still pretty new with linux.

You should really make sure you unmount it first.

I doubt you'd ruin the pendrive, but you might corrupt your data.

To safely remove it, you just need to make sure it's unmounted. If you mounted it manually, then you probably know how to unmount it :)

If your system automatically mounted it for you when plugged in, it probably put an icon on your desktop to access it. In Gnome, you can right-click the icon and choose to unmount it from there. I'm sure KDE has something similar.

Once unmounted: yank it! :)
