Question s3 864 in X 4.2

I'm trying to install debian on an old p166 which a friend from work had lying around doing nothing. Figured I'd jump in the deep end and have a crack at installing it. I had X running from the 2.2 dist of debian, but d/l'ed the new dist (3.0) a couple of days ago. I am having a bit of trouble getting the X display working. I have an old S3 864 video card in the box, and the X site says that it is no longer supported by the 4.2.0 version but was in the 3.3.6 version. Does this mean that my card will no longer work with X? Should I revert back to X ver 3.3.6? Or is there a driver that will work I need to grab (just not part of the distibuted drivers any more)? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
