Rythmbox and Gtkpod don't display my iPod or songs. And other stuff

I've been trying to get my ipod to work under floola, gtkpod or rythmbox.I'm currently running Crunchbang. Is there any other way I can add songs to my iPod?

Do I need to reformat my iPod?

ps:Since I'm completely new to Linux.I'll read whatever needs to be read and will take suggestions of any kind regarding learning Unix and whatever else is out there.
