running x

I have built a miminal Debian system (from woody r2) and updated the kernel to 2.6.4. Now I am trying to install xfree86. I thought that I would install x and make sure it runs before I installl a desktop app (like KDE). So my first question is: can I run and test x without a desktop app?

Yes, you can (using startx), but if you don't have a window manager it'll quit with an error. You can install something simple and small (like Blackbox or Window Maker) before KDE to make sure everything works.
