Running Windows programs in Linux

Is it possible to run programs made for Windows in Linux? From what I have read about WINE it sounds like after WINE is installed you can install the Windows program normally, is that true?
If not, how would I install a Windows program in Linux

You can't directly install a windows program on a linux partition. You can however install the windows app on the windows partition and try running it from the linux partition using wine.

You can also run a virtual machine emulator program to run Windows and many of its apps while inside Linux.

VMware is good, allow you to run many different types of OS's, but it is expensive and slow. Win4Lin is faster and cheaprer, but opnly allows you to run Win95 or 98. I think ME as well, but totally sure.

No you don't need windows installed for wine to work. Read the documentation at

http://www.winehq.com/Docs/wine-user/no-windows.shtml

That should give you a brief description on how wie works without needing windows.
