have you thought about using wine. there is an excellent how-to at frankscorner.org and at winehq.org
i was able to run starcraft within minutes of wine install.

I am using Win4Lin and it was vary easy to install. The only drawback is that it will not handle DirectX, so games that use it will not work. I have played with Transgaming's Winex, but found it's performace to be rather slow, but it has gotten better with each each release.
Tring to use just Wine to install/run most new M$ software probiblt will not work, Transgaming lisened Installshield code to help with installing M$ games.

Keep in mind that vmware will run MUCH slower than your actual computer.

For example, I run vmware on my laptop (P333 192 Megs of RAM) so I can run Magic The Gathering...and it runs about like a p166 with 64 Megs of Ram...or maybe a 133. Which is acceptable since Magic is an old game....but if you're thinking running the latest wizbang FP shooter with DirectX9 and stuff...forget it.
