Running windows from within linux
I have heard about running remote windows desktop from within linux.
Now i have a Pentium-3 system with both linux(RedHat) and windows-98 installed and i connect to the net via internal modem. Now is it possible to boot into linux and run windows from linux,if yes how do i do it?How is this remote windows-desktop used ? What i am trying to do is work on both the OSes without having to reboot to switch between the OSes. Thanks in advance... -rbh |
Well, you can't exactly run windows from within linux, but you can at least run some windows programs from within linux... is that what you mean?
If so, have a look at a couple of programs; WINE - http://www.winehq.com/ DOSemu - http://www.dosemu.org/ Regards. |
I haven't tried out VMWare yet but, we can't install windows under VMWare?

It is not free but, for me, the price for the version I got was more than worth the trouble. I have tried Wine and I've heard of VMWare, although I've no experience with VMWare. Honestly, I had some really low expectations for Win4Lin. I figured it might be some kind of Wine-based doodad that just ran programs or something. I was shocked to see, well, just what I'd REALLY wanted. A full windows installation that ran in its own window under linux. It worked very well for a long long time. I don't use it much anymore because the need isn't there anymore for my situation. The only drawback I saw to Win4Lin was that you were at the mercy of their support site issuing kernel-patches for whatever kernel version you wanted to run. This sometimes took awhile after a new kernel release. All in all, however, if you are looking to run "windows" inside an X-Session on linux, give Win4Lin a try. I was highly impressed with how well it worked. |
Just in case you actually wanted to remotely access a Wondows machine from your Linux desktop then you need the app rdesktop which will seemlessly connect you to Xp & win 2000 shared desktop servelets on remote machines.
