Running a kernel compile for first time

I have my source <kernel-source-2.2.20> in a directory: /usr/src/linux-2.2.20
and in that directory I run: "make-kpkg clean"

It comes back to me with the following message:

"We do not seem to be in a top level linux kernel source directory tree. Since we are trying to make a kernel package, that does not make sense. Please change directory to a top level linux source directory, and try again. (If I am wrong, and this is indeed a top level linux source directory. then I have gotten sadly out of date with current kernels, and you should upgrade kernel-package)

Note: My kernel is currently <linux 2.2.20>

Would someone tell me exactly what I need to do?

Thanks

Can't tell you what exactly you have to do, I never know it myself ;)
But I have an idea... do you have a symlink /usr/src/linux pointing to your linux-2.2.20 directory?

Haha, I just realized what those symlinks were for. Hopefully this will fix his problem....
