The directory listing you posted is from an extracted tarball, NOT a "portable app" from that link in your original post. Which is it you're trying to use?

The "portable" version should work just like Firefox did. Download it, run it.

The version you posted the directory listing for needs to be compiled. The INSTALL document lists the steps you need to take. Provided you have all of the prerequisites, it's just three commands:
./configure
make
sudo make install

or you can skip the make install and just run it from the current directory

If you're missing a prerequisite, then it'll tell you.

The OP needs to use AppDirAssistant
Open it
Let it run
It will search for apps that aren't installed
Leave app Open
Install the app from Synaptic or Software Center
Appdir detects the new found app & packs it up along with dependencies & makes executable.
The reason for using older distro is because then the portable app can run on any machine.
