rumors of a linux distro made just for hacking based of ubuntu

i heard a website called 711chan was a building a linux distro used for hacking.
can anyone confirm this?

Closest thing to this I'm aware of was the book called 'Hacking: The Art of Exploitation' by Jon Erickson which had a version of Ubuntu with it. As for the 'hacking' tools they were all run-of-the-mill stuff. Ethics dictate that it would not be appropriate to name any of the tools, but they are mostly well known.

OK, I'll ask.

What do you want to hack?

~sHyLoCk~ 01-08-2010 11:05 AM

Please define "hacking!"

i think you're thinking about a distro made for "cracking", at least according to Eric S. Raymond's definition:
Quote:

There is another group of people who loudly call themselves hackers, but aren't. These are people (mainly adolescent males) who get a kick out of breaking into computers and phreaking the phone system. Real hackers call these people ‘crackers’ and want nothing to do with them. Real hackers mostly think crackers are lazy, irresponsible, and not very bright, and object that being able to break security doesn't make you a hacker any more than being able to hotwire cars makes you an automotive engineer. Unfortunately, many journalists and writers have been fooled into using the word ‘hacker’ to describe crackers; this irritates real hackers no end.
(i'll use that definition here) so if you're thinking of a distro made for cracking, then yeah, there's not one, there's tons of 'em, including a very popular one based off ubuntu indeed. still, i won't name them here, because i'm not a big fan of them, but here's a hint: go look in wikipedia, specifically the article for unofficial ubuntu distros.

It is called BackTrack 4. Look it up on Google.

FYI, Hacking is *not* cracking.

Hacking=Making something work how you want it too.

Cracking=Illegal exploitations, password cracking, etc.

And there is nothing wrong with ethical cracking against your own systems, since illegal cracking will always exist. If ethical cracking tools were not made readily available, illegal crackers would take advantage and compromise the system. Better to find out yourself than have someone else find it out.

Also, this should be moved to Linux - Security and made with an appropriate title.

Linuxquestions.org wasn't designed for questions on ethical hacking and cracking, however. You should take most questions regarding the use of such tools elsewhere, like HackForums.

Um... Frankly, I don't think any serious hacker/cracker would be using Ubuntu. That would be like using a training bicycle in the Daytona 500.

Cannot confirm nor deny it, but a Google search for 711CHAN turns up page after page of ridiculous crap links, many of which are not suitable for all ages.

As for "hackers using Ubuntu", it sure looks like Ubuntu that's used on one or more of the machines Garcia uses on Criminal Minds ;)

I haven't heard of 711chan either, plus it probably wouldn't be better than backtrack.

yeas.
i got the same thing but i was able to find a link for hacking tools for ubuntu
im guessing theyre just going to make a pack of ubuntu that comes with those tools.
but its just a guess

With the new release of BackTrack 4, it is now Ubuntu-based. Backtrack includes pretty much all "hacking" tools.

XavierP 01-08-2010 04:00 PM

It's a *Chan board. Home of many internet memes and, of course, Anonymous. If you don't know about the Chans, please don't go there - you really aren't ready.

Anyway, it's probably either a hoax, a joke or a project that went nowhere (any project where all the team members are anonymous will fail quickly).

As with any tools for (any) linux, they can likely easily be installed and used with pretty much any distro.
