rt2800usb siocsifflags no such file or directory

I am trying to run Puppy 5.25 on a older gateway solo 5300 laptop. I have an usb pcmcia card installed for usb 2.0 capability. On one usb port i have a wireless adapter made by zonet (zew2500p). the network wizard sees the adapter as wlan0. the kernal driver is rt2800. when i scan for active networks this error shows up.failed to raise interface wlan0 failed command wasif config wlan0 up error returned siocsifflags no such file or directory.

I am building this machine up for a native indian student (6 grade remedial) so that she can have internet access for her studies. I have little chioce in hardware so if this could be made to work that would be great. thanks
