rsync install linux 9 shrike
 

Hi,

I need to update rsync from version 2.5.7 protocol version 26 to the current version or 2.6.3 protocol version 28. I am working from the command line and want to make sure that i install and run the correct files to the correct location. what is the most newbie proof way to accomplish this goal of updating rsync to the current version?
OS info: Linux redhat release 9 (Shrike)

The best way - upgrade to a newer version of Linux. RH9 is so old now, that it is unsupported and no longer receives security updates. Unless you have a real need to be running such an old version, upgrade.

Fedora is the successor to the community Redhat distros - the current release is version 6 (and 7 will be out soon). Alternatively, try Ubuntu Edgy or Debian Testing (Etch) or Suse 10.2. All of these have much more recent software, and are quite good for newbies. All of them will have an updated version of rsync that can be installed through their respective package managers.

If you must stick with RH9, then try to find a RPM for rsync somewhere. If it is for RH9, then it will install to the correct location. Be aware, of course, that you may need to upgrade large portions of your system so that it will actually work.
