RSS and VSIZE using ps

Hi,

I have an app where I:

1) consume memory
2) release said memory
3) and then consume memory again.

The VSIZE does what I expect. It grows until the release. Stays constant whilst all the memory is released. Doesn't grow when I consume again (until a point where I have consumed more memory than the first run).

RSS grows throughout the whole experiment.

Why does RSS keep growing?

Sorry guys I should have added this is using ps command on linux.

ps -eo pid,ppid,rss,vsize,pcpu,pmem,cmd

Many Thanks...
