RPMs from other distros
Hello,
My question is about using RPMs intended for one distro (SUSE) to install on a Red Hat box. Is this possible and/or desirable? Are there any problems with doing this? I am asking this because I notice that there is a program that provides RPMs for SUSE, but not for Red Hat, and my system is Red Hat 9.0. I did not find this addressed anywhere. Thank you in advance. |
Suse checks RPM's before installing them, Yast will not allow you to install.
Red Hat should do the same, but I only now that if you get PACKAGE DEPENDENCIES ERRORS the package requires an additional package to work. You should install that package first. So there seems to be some kind of safety mechanism. CB CB |
Thanks
Thank you very much. I will give it a try.

correct me if im wrong, but when an rpm is for (for example) Redhat 9
what it is actually saying, is it will work with redhat 9's environment, for example it needs a glibc2.3.x and other dependency's that are installed by redhat. so provided the distro's are of a similar age, the package should work, and if it doesnt, just solve the dependency issues. (except glibc, NEVER attempt to update your glibc without properly reading up on it and understanding the concequences) |
