Make sure you have all the tools for RPM.. rpmbuild is a command in RedHat 8. I would recommend getting apt-get for RPMS's http://apt.rpmfind.net
And then do an apt-get install synaptic to install the apt-get front end for X..
It is the easiest way to check and update packages on your system that I have found. You can also use apt-get upgrade to make sure your system is up to date.. Instead of using the RHN which doesn't always work. I hope this helps.
