RPM or Dpkg ?
 

I am wanting to install a linux distro to host all of my family music and pictures, etc. I installed Ubuntu 6.06 that I downloaded somewhere on my desktop. Everything seems fine. I also have two DVDs with openSuSE 10.2 that I got from a magazine which I installed on an Intel dual xeon server that I had laying around.

My question is... is there any preference as to which I should use? Does it really matter? Should bot machines run the same distro? Seems that the big difference is the package management. Will the apps that I want to run -- web site hobbying, tinkering with Apache and MySQL, and serving up music to the XP machines for the wife and kids, install and run the same on either?

Thoughts?

you're free to run whatever you'd rather, major pacages will always be available for each distribution, regardless of the packaging system they may use. always best to pick what you feel most comfortable with (within reason...)

It doesn't really matter, but in my opinion dpkg handles dependencies better then rpm

well there's the opinion of someone who doesn't use rpm based distro's... popularity contest.

You really dislike my dislike for red hat don't you

I've used RPM based distros, and always come back to Debian based distros.
