rpm isn't working, why?

so i got gcc and make and everything else to work, but now i'm having trouble with the rpm in the terminal.

whenever i try to run it, i get the following:

Code:
# rpm -Uvh something.rpm --prefix /home/name/programs
    1:something ###################### [100%]
#
whenever i try to do this, whenever i try to run rpm it happens. the reson i'm trying to use rpm this way is when i try to use yast in suse to install the rpms, it doesn't load. this is only for things like, gaim and other programs. make, gcc, glib, etc. rpms run fine in yast.

Hi.

That looks like a normal output. What are you expecting to happen?

i've tried various packages, but the one that's most known would be gaim. when i try to install gaim, i get no results - i get that rundown thing to 100%, and then nothing. from what i understood, it was supposed install the rpm to the specified directory. am i wrong in this assumption? if so, how do i get the rpm to install the specified program?

When that rundown thing hits 100%, it's installed. To see what has been installed where, do 'rpm -ql gaim' and you'll see a list of all the files installed.

That --prefix command looks slightly sketchy ... chances are you want gcc to be installed into /usr so everyone on the system can use it and all the libraries go in the right place. Of course there's nothing to stop you from installing stuff in your home directory, but a lot of system tools look for binaries and libraries in well defined places and you need to make sure you tell them about any nonstandard install locations (if you already know this and have done so, my apologies).

The --prefix /home/name/programs option would end up installing files in directories like:

/home/name/programs/bin
/home/name/programs/lib
/home/name/programs/src

So have a look in the /home/name/programs directory for these sorts of sub-directories.
