It seems you are having a problem with rpm manager.
Does the terminal hang whenever u do # rpm [command]

Fix
-----
#ps -eaf|grep rpm
#kill -9 [pid] (pid coming above)
#rpm -f /var/lib/rpm/_db*
#rpm --rebuild(optional step)

Hope this works.

Thx,

Avirup

your sol. works. but now another problem arise..
a new process /var/lib/rpm/rpmq is stated and change it pid by incrementing 2 each time.
so it could not be killed by i.
and after killing and repeating the process. same hang up is seen. while
rpm -qa works.. but rpm -e is not.
any suggestion
thanks

whole story is:
i wrote:
rpm -qa | grep gaim
gaim-0.58-x.x
then
i use
rpm -e gaim-0.58-x.x

and it terminal hangs.
then i check
ps -aux | grep rpm
it show 0.0 cpu time of rpm -e .......
then kill -9 [PID of rpm -e]
only kills it. if i use
rpm -i <rpm package>
or
rpm --rebuilddb

result is similar

Now what to do..............................
any suggestion
