You are trying to install a scr.rpm.

You can try this..
Quote:
sudo yum install gcc

Welcome to LQ.

"gcc-4.1.1-52.el5.src.rpm" is not a usable gcc, but source code.
I.e all SRC.RPMs are source code.

Packages for el5 : http://mirror.centos.org/centos/5.9/os/

please use "yum" to install software
gcc REQUIRES a lot a LOT more than just gcc

this is the older RHEL 5 series
so you did buy the required support contract ? right ?
also 5.4 is old , the current version in the older 5 series is 5.9

to install software on RHEL you MUST buy the required support contract

if you did not and do not intend on buying the required license then do not use RHEL !

Instead install one of the FREE rebuilds like
CentOS 5.9 ( for the OLDER 5 series)
or the current
CentOS 6.3

to install gcc on a paid for and registered install of rhel5 use yum
Code:
su -
yum groupinstall "Development Tools"

You don't install an OS into a 'partition'. If you want CentOS, you can either bring up a virtual machine and load it, or you can erase RHEL5 and load CentOS instead.

If you're not paying for RHEL, you SHOULD NOT BE USING IT. Load CentOS instead..it's 99.x% IDENTICAL, but totally free. If you use RHEL without paying, you WILL NOT get bugfixes/updates/patches/security fixes, and loading new software will be MUCH more difficult. Also, you are aware that RHEL (and CentOS) 5 is a bit old??? The latest versions are 6.3, I believe...if this is a new installation, load the newest OS.

please install the current CentOS 5.9
( it is the current in the older 5 series )

but the current RHEL and CentOS is
RHEL 6.4 and CentOS 6.3

unless you MUST use the older 5 series the current 6 would be better

cent offers a "migration " option
BUT for the ( not supported by CentOS ) rhel5.4 that might not work

the migration is for going from RHEL 5.9 to CentOS 5.9 ( or 6.3 to 6.3 )

Installing the default compilers : # yum install gcc-c++ compat-gcc-34-c++

'gcc-2.7.2.3-11.i386.rpm' is a 15 year old package. Not supposed to work.
Besides that : No gcc package will work for compiling an application
without the "gcc-c++ dependencies" installed together with gcc-c++.

Installing all OpenMPI : # yum install openmpi-devel

Also suggest : # yum install "Development Tools".

Spell out your words, and don't expect people to answer you 'soon'. We VOLUNTEER our time here, and don't just wait for you to post. If you need a reply NOW, then as you've been told: CALL REDHAT SUPPORT, SINCE YOU SHOULD BE PAYING FOR IT BY USING RHEL.

AGAIN: either PAY FOR RHEL, and get the (very old) package from them and use yum to install it, or load the current version of CentOS (which is 99.x% IDENTICAL to RHEL, but FREE), and type in "yum install <package name>". We've given you advice; either take it, or not.

gcc-2.7.2.3-11.i386.rpm
that better be a typo

2.7 is very ancient last updated in 1998

for the very Ancient RH5.1 ( from 1998)
and not for the just older RHEL 5.9
there was a name change back in 2003

RH5.1 ( NOT to be confused wit hRHEL5 ) came out on "5.1 (Manhattan), May 22, 1998 (Linux 2.0.34-0.6)"

RH9 went to RHEL3 with the name change

for CentOS 5.9 please see post 4
and install the" Development Tools " group
Code:
su -
----- your root password when asked -----
yum groupinstall "Development Tools" "Development Libraries"
the (Development Libraries) is from the list of installable groups
from the command ( yum grouplist )
and do not forget to have the two "" around the group name
the dev tools will also install all of the "auto tools" that are needed for configure to be able to run

it is very advisable that you read the CentOS wiki !
http://wiki.centos.org/
http://wiki.centos.org/Documentation

and read the documentation
- the cent ones are a bit old
http://www.centos.org/docs/5/
but they are the RHEL docs
https://access.redhat.com/knowledge/...erprise_Linux/
the older 5RHEL5 docs are near the bottom of the page

I also tried the command

# yum groupinstall "Development tools" "Development tools"

but I am getting below error.................

Loaded plugins: fastestmirror, security
Loading mirror speeds from cached hostfile
Error: Cannot find a valid baseurl for repo: new

I have also tried to installed gcc-4.1.2-54.el5.i386.rpm because this is more compatible wit centOS 5.9 AND gcc-2.7.2.3-11.i386.rpm is a old version... using command...

# yum install gccgcc-4.1.2-54.el5.i386.rpm

BUT I AM GETTING THE SAME ERROR AS ABOVE

Error: Cannot find a valid baseurl for repo: new

I am connected to the internet , and also checked my DNS.
to resolve this error do I have to append url in any of the files in
package ?if so then where should I append ??

gcc-4.1.2-54.el5.i386.rpm
requires A LOT of prerequisites to be installed first

Quote:
Error: Cannot find a valid baseurl for repo: new
odd
It this a virtual install on say vmware or some other VM
if not
Are you using a wireless router that is not set up .
or
Did you try to install the software as a normal user ? ( if so that will not work )

Did you uninstall the base repos ?
please post the full output of this
as a normal user ( NOT ROOT -- the "su -" command takes care of that)

Code:
su -
---- type in your root password when it is asked for ----
yum repolist all
