rpm -e doesn't work for me!

Hello folks,

I have a small rpm issue--I hope its a small issue. I've been at Linux on and off for about 4 years. Seriously on and off.
The problem I've had and continue to encounter is when I install something by rpm and for some reason need to remove the entire thing, according to 'man rpm' or rpm --help, rpm -e should remove it. But I get the message that XXXXXXX-1871_FC5.i686.rpm is not installed. What gives?
I've read the man page and info page---what am I not doing?

Thanks!
Freestone

The message is correct the package XXXXXXX-1871_FC5.i686.rpm is not installed. However the package XXXXXXX-1871_FC5.i686 may be installed.

Install by the filename; XXXXXXX-1871_FC5.i686.rpm

Remove by the package name; XXXXXXX-1871_FC5.i686

Sounds like maybe a typo, case sensative and all. Use the rpm querry to see what the rpm should look like.
For example:
# rpm -qa | grep smb4k
smb4k-0.6.9-1.fc5

# rpm -e smb4k-0.6.9-1.fc5

# rpm -qa | grep smb4k
#

You can just use the package name e.g.
Code:
#rpm -e smb4k
instead of
Code:
#rpm -e smb4k-0.6.9-1.fc5

I have tried rpm -e package-name.blah.blah.rpm. It doesn't work.
Thank you for the replies and I will try each of the other suggestions.

Thanks again,
Freestone

As Lenard said, leave off the .rpm part of it....
