root password not recognized in Gnome terminal

I have finally succeeded in installing Debian etch on my computer. The problem is when I try to login as sudo su on Gnome terminal, my root password is not recognized. However, when I use X terminal as root, the password is recognized  . The password is also recognized when I try to do administrative stuff  . Does anyone what's going on with my system? Is it safe to just use X terminal as root instead of Gnome's ? If it is, I'll just use X terminal instead of Gnome's. Thanks.

sudo su uses your user password as usual and not the root password. If the root user is enabled, then su will require your root password.

They are all just terminal emulators, anyone is the same as the other in terms of security (well, unless they coded some keyloger or something into it). Unless your talking about running X as root, in which case, never do it.

Umm, why are you using "sudo su"?, doesn't that defeat the purpose of sudo?
