root password

Hi guys!

I'm another newbie to Linux. I decided to switch to Kubuntu from Windows just yesterday. And to further learn about linux, I'd like to connect to the internet (ADSL).

I've been trying pppoeconf, but it requires me to "become root". I don't know if I'm doing it right, but I went to the terminal window and ...

Code:
$ su
Password: [typed in password]
Authentication Failure
Sorry.
This might be the most stupid thing: The Kubuntu installation asked me of one password only -- and this is the password to the my user (and the only one I have). But the su does not accept that. I don't have any other passwords.

But when I tried changing some settings (say in the Network Connections), the GUI requires me to have an administrator access and asks me of a root password (it says "Login as Root: su"). I type in the SAME password, and it goes through.

I don't know if it's the same thing though.

If this is a stupid question, let me apologize in advance

Can anyone help me?

Reboot into single user mode and or use init=/bin/bash, reset root's password, reboot.
