Root? Or does it matter?

Well im having some problems.

I downloaded some softwares (Two programs) and tried compiling em, well the first run with
./configure - worked just fine
then when I used
make install - It started out just fine but the end had some errors, same with both the programs.

So my question is: Do I have to be ROOT when I do this sort of thing ? Or does it matter?

(Im using mandrake)

AFAIK, you don't have to be root for the "make " and "./configure" steps, but you need to be root for "make install"
