root login for mandrake 9.1
 

This is gonna sound like one total idiot question, but

How in hell's name do I log out of user and back in as root in mandrake 9.1?

I get the "log out john" prompt

Then when I go to log back in as root, all I get is the nice little graphic login that only gives me my login icon/name to click, followed by the password box.

there doesn't seem to be anyway I can input root or the root password.

Any ideas?

well there may be a way to do it in the interface but i can't really picture what your seeing, but something that will work, is you could try:
ctrl-alt-backspace (to kill X server)
su to root and type in your password
type "startx"

use the control panel
 

I know. I got caught on this too. I've been in Debian land since new years but decided to give Mandy 9.1 a try. Nice looking but a lot of little tidbits like this were changed. Just go to the KDE control panel. find the login manager and where it lists logins allowed, enable the root login and apply. Root will be there. Personally I liked kde's old login that allowed you to type in the user (in case of a bad mouse) so you could log in to root wihtout having it visible in the login screen (kdm)

It didn't even occur that the answer would be in the kde side of things.

I was totally convinced that that'd be under the mandrake control centre.

Hence I now have the excellent "root" theme installed for my root account from kdelook ( the one with the mad looking "biohazard" sign in red as the wallpaper ).
