root login failed - RHEL AS2.1

Hi! I'm a newbie in Linux. I'm having login problem as root in RHEL AS2.1. After I login as root and supplied the password for it, the screen becomes blank and goes back to login graphical console again. This problem occurred after our area encountered power interruptions. But I can login as another user and su root. I tried logging using text mode (Ctrl-Alt-F1) and root login works. What needs to be done in order for me to login as root in graphical console.

Can anyone please advise/help. Thanks.

please post the .bash_profile of root, along with the relevant scripts which are called from it.
Also please post /etc/pam.d/login
