Just get into run level 3 and check for the logs of Xorg (/var/log/Xorg.0.log), which may help us a bit if they have any errors.

Do NOT bump your own thread, and especially don't do it more than once. It does NOT make anyone help you any faster, and will often times make people NOT answer you, because you're doing it. We VOLUNTEER our time here...bumping your own thread to try to get help faster is just plain rude.

Short answer? You're using Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5...call Red Hat support, since you're paying for it with your RHEL subscription, right??? Since it's of obvious urgency to you, their support folks are there for you, 24/7 with your paid subscription.

If you did this, and THEN started having problems, you have then identified the problem, and know how to fix it. Restore the old shadow file from backups. Your system users (like the ones that are related to system services, and may affect your X and/or login processes), aren't exactly portable between systems just by copying a file. And, there are MANY of them, so even if you knew which line (providing it's only ONE), was causing the problem, if you don't know what it was BEFORE, you wouldn't know how to change it BACK.

If you don't have a backup, then you may have to reload your system.

Glad it's fixed, but it helps to mention EVERYTHING you did when asking a question.
