Right Distro? Vid drivers? Wine?

I am having a dickens of a time. I was content with attempting this on my own, but I made enough boo boo's last night that I pretty much decided I NEEDED to start from scratch.

So here I am now, with a fresh Fedora Cord 5 install, and all I have done is updated the kernel and downloaded the drivers from nVidia for my 7900. My processor is an AMD64 3700


So here is my problem. I have Fedora dual booted with XP. My ultimate goal is to get World of Warcraft working on it.

I found MANY sets of instructions and began following them to see what I could do. I ended up with some Wine errors, but that is neither here nor there at this point. It was basically saying that it couldnt create a certain directory - but I am not worried about that for the moment.


What I am worried about is my nVidia drivers. I realized I should probably install them before trying to get the game working.

I have had nothing but problems.

I downloaded the drivers directly from nVidia. I go to install them (outside of X) and I get a message that I do not have the correct kernel source in the nVidia install program. That I should try a different kernel. I went back to the only other one I had (15 instead of 17) and tried it - same thing

I found another set of instructions on how to install thru YUM.
It failed there as well. I tried a the older kernel again, and same thing.

I installed linux as a learning expirience, but I am afraid I dont know enough about what I am doing to accomplish this.

Some have told me Fedora sucks, and I should try something else.. Debian or Ubuntu, but the underlying OS is still linux. I have to imagine I can get this working somehow

So right now I have a more or less fresh install of Fedora.
Anyone have any suggestions on how to proceed?
Should I try a more user friendly distro?

If I get WoW installed and running, its all thats keeping me from sorta shoo shooing windows away. I am aware of the learning curve, but really wanna make this work. (everything, not just the game)

In general, I would not recommend changing distros to solve a specific problem--ie the NVidia drivers. I don't have experience with the NVidia issue, but there has been a lot of traffic on it.
Search here and in Google using specific terms--eg "nvidia drivers fedora core 5".
Also, post exact error messages and the operation that causes them.
Finally---short posts with specific questions will get much faster response.

I am not sure why there are some people out there that say Fedore sucks. I started with it and have used it for awhile and it has been good for me. It seems as newbie friendly as any of the other distros I have tried.

Many people have gotten World of Warcraft working. You have to check out transgaming, which charges you money for their program but it seems to be the easiest route for getting it to work.

The problem sounds like your kernel source and kernel do not match. They must be the same version, release, etc. for the nVidia drivers to install. They also will not match if the source is missing. During the part of the Fedora install when you check which packages you want, you should check Kernel Development to make sure these components are available to the nVidia script.

I have also seen the download from the nVidia website misfire. I can tell you from experience, bad things happen when you try to install a corrupted driver.
